How we do it: Women Creating that Work/Life Balance

In the 2019 social climate, discussion about working women is high on the agenda. It’s little wonder, considering that as of last year, women make up almost half of the Australian workforce and 60% of Aussie women aged between 25 and 60 have paid work. Social media feeds are filled with pieces discussing whether women can really have it all, and memes that ultimately boil down to one message: ‘Girls Can.’

To this, the team at BIG4 Beacon Resort have one response, “Of course we can.”

In a group of over 60 employees, more than 90% are female. Personalities and lifestyles are varied, ranging from university students, to working mums and the semi-retired. But at the end of the day, the team’s success can be summed up quite easily. “We all have each other’s backs,” says BIG4 Beacon Resort Owner/Operator, Lorraine Golightly. If one of the girls is busy with exams or somebody has to stay home with a sick child there is always someone willing to step in and help out. “It’s swings and round-a-bouts,” says one employee “We really are friends first and co-workers second.” In fact, ‘Friend’ is common nickname amongst the staff. Mornings at Beacon are often started off with a chorus of “Hi Friend!”

When the employees are asked what the key is to creating that work life balance, many are quick to talk about the benefits of having such an understanding employer. “She really does lead by example.” One team member says of Lorraine.  And it’s extremely easy to see. Lorraine herself is a leader in the tourism industry, and having taken over the business her parents built from the ground up, she was literally born and raised at Beacon. As far as bosses go, you’d be hard pressed to find any as hands on with the day to day running of things. “Work is important, but not more so than life and family,” she says, “by supporting our team to find that balance we are not only creating satisfaction, but also encouraging employment longevity. The average employment length for our staff is eleven years.”

And what about that small percentage of men?  They are affectionately referred to as ‘The Boys’ “They love us.” Say the girls with a grin “They almost never complain when we boss them around.” And when the women and men of Beacon head home at the end of the day? Of course, they are looking forward to seeing their friends again tomorrow.
